Tips To Improve Your Fashion Style

Fashion is a topic that preoccupies men more and more these days. They have realized that looking good is not a department that the ladies have exclusive control over. A sense of fashion is an asset in every aspect of a man's life: business, personal and social.

While there are still some that will try to fight it, the reality is that a well-dressed man will get a second look. Personality is important, but no one takes a quick look at you and says, "Wow -- check out the sense of humor on that guy."

In today's world, to stay one step ahead, it's important to look your best. That means developing your own sense of style. For a lot of men, that's a scary thought. But fear not, I'm here to guide you through it.

1- Listen to the experts
I've met far too many men who have gone through life having their style dictated to them by their mothers, then by their girlfriends, and then by their wives. There are also those men who escaped the trap of wearing someone else's style only to find themselves with no style whatsoever.

If you've never taken a shot at creating your own style, a good place to start is with the experts. Pick up a copy of a men's fashion magazine or log on to AskMen.com. Instead of flipping straight to the sports editorial or the babe of the month, check out the fashion section.

Read a few articles and you'll soon find that you've picked up most of the basic rules: don't wear light socks with dark shoes, always match your shoes with your belt, never wear anything too tight.

While you're checking out those mags, check out the ads that you usually skip over. They'll give you a good idea of where the trends are heading. Which brings us to tip two...

2- Get with the trends
Fashion is all about evolving style. What's in, what's out. What's new, what's passé. What's hot, what's not. But put all those clichés aside and being stylish is about looking good. It's also about knowing what to wear right now.

But with trends changing faster than you can say fashion faux pas, how can men be expected to keep up?

A good place to start is to take a look at popular artists from the music, movie and TV industries. Look around for trendsetters and take some tips from them. In particular, check out what they wear during awards shows and adapt it to your style.

The clothes worn by the actors on TV shows like The OC , Las Vegas and most daytime soaps (ask your girlfriend about these) are generally good examples of what is acceptable dress.

If you've flipped through all the fashion mags, watched TV, tried wandering down the streets, and have still come up empty, you will never go wrong emulating the threads of celebrities such as Pierce Brosnan, Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise, and Will Smith.
3- Go retro
Fashion is a cyclical concept. What was once old will soon be new again. Remember when you were chastised for wearing your aviator sunglasses? Well, now you can wear them with confidence because they're back.

While renewing one's wardrobe is important, throwing old stuff out isn't always a good idea. With vintage clothing being very trendy right now, you may be able to dig through some of your old clothes and find something that you never would have dreamed you could wear again.

Things to look for include logo T-shirts, patterned button-down shirts and motorcycle-style jackets. Once your favorite wardrobe items, they're back in style... and you need to enjoy them while the trend lasts.

4- Stay in shape
Fashion is not just about what you wear, it's also about how you wear it. Take the same threads and put them on two different people: one who's in good shape and athletic, and another who has a beer gut, round shoulders and a sunken chest. No matter what the clothes are, they'll look better on the first guy.

Taking better care of your body can be as simple as making a few minor changes to your diet and spending a couple of hours at the gym every week. The related benefits of being healthier are that you'll feel better about your body, be more confident and, therefore, look better. Attitude stems from confidence, and a large part of style is attitude.

5- Be yourself
The most important aspect of developing your own style is remaining true to yourself. Just because something looked great on that Versace model doesn't necessarily mean it's for you. If you're uncomfortable in it, chances are it isn't.

There are enough styles out there that everyone should be comfortable finding their own. Even if you discover that your own style isn't mainstream, you're better off respecting that realization than walking around in a sheep suit that doesn't fit.

fix your fashion

The ultimate point is that developing your own style should not be a chore; it should be fun. When you discover what works for you, you'll see that striving to look your best isn't work at all. It should come naturally.
